The Agafay Desert sits just 30 km from Marrakech, which means it's an easy add-on to almost any trip to the city — but the season and time of day you choose can completely change the experience. Here's how to time it right.
Late March through May, and again from September through November, are generally the most comfortable months to explore Agafay. Daytime temperatures are warm without being extreme, evenings are pleasant, and the light across the rocky plateau is especially beautiful in the hours around sunrise and sunset. If you have flexibility in your travel dates, these shoulder seasons are worth prioritizing.
Summer in the Agafay Desert brings intense midday heat, so activities like camel rides, quad biking, or buggy tours are best scheduled for early morning or late afternoon rather than the middle of the day. The upside: summer evenings in the desert are warm and clear, making it an excellent time for an overnight stay at one of the camps — think dinner under a genuinely star-filled sky, without needing heavy layers.
Winter days in Agafay are usually mild and sunny, pleasant for hiking and daytime activities. Nights, however, can get genuinely cold in the desert, so if you're booking La Nuitée (an overnight camp stay) between November and February, pack a warm layer — most camps provide blankets and heating, but the walk between your tent and the dining area can be brisk.
Regardless of season, sunset is consistently the most photographed and most requested time to be in Agafay — the low light turns the lunar-like rock formations gold and orange, and it pairs perfectly with a camel ride or a rooftop dinner at camp. Sunrise offers a quieter, cooler alternative with far fewer other visitors around, ideal if you're staying overnight and want to catch first light over the plateau before breakfast.
If your trip falls during Ramadan, some daytime activity schedules and camp dining times may shift slightly to accommodate the evening iftar meal. It's still entirely possible to visit and experience the desert — just let us know your travel dates in advance so we can plan pickup and activity times accordingly.
