What to Pack for a Desert Adventure Near Marrakech

The Agafay Desert isn't the Sahara — you won't need an expedition kit — but it does have its own climate quirks worth planning for, whether you're doing a half-day activity or staying overnight. Here's what actually earns a spot in your bag.

Clothing

• Light, breathable layers for daytime — cotton or linen works well in the desert heat.
• A warmer layer (light jacket or sweater) for the evening, even in summer, since temperatures drop noticeably after sunset.
• Long sleeves and pants are worth having on hand for quad biking or buggy tours, both for sun and dust protection.
• A scarf or shemagh-style wrap is genuinely useful — locals wear them for a reason, and they double as sun and dust protection during windier moments.

Footwear

Comfortable closed-toe shoes are the single most useful item you can pack. Sandals look nice for photos but aren't ideal for quad biking, hiking, or walking across loose, rocky terrain. If you're doing a camel ride only, sandals are fine — but bring sneakers or hiking shoes if your day includes any of the more active options.

Sun and Dust Protection

• Sunscreen (SPF 30+) — the desert sun is stronger than it feels, especially with a breeze cooling your skin.
• Sunglasses, ideally something that wraps or fits snugly, since quad and buggy rides kick up dust.
• A hat or cap with a brim for shade during camel rides or hikes.
• Lip balm with SPF — an easy one to forget, and dry desert air is tough on lips.

If You're Staying Overnight (La Nuitée)

• A change of clothes, since dust from daytime activities tends to follow you back to camp.
• Any personal medication — the nearest pharmacy is back in Marrakech, roughly 45 minutes away.
• A phone charger or power bank, as outlet access varies by camp.
• A camera or phone with good low-light capability if you want to capture the stars — desert skies here are remarkably clear.

Practical Extras

• Cash (MAD or EUR) — most desert activities and camps are paid directly on-site rather than online.
• A reusable water bottle — you'll be offered water throughout the day, but it's good to have your own too.
• Wet wipes or hand sanitizer, useful after quad biking or camel rides.

What You Can Leave Behind

You don't need hiking poles, an elaborate first-aid kit, or heavy trekking gear for a standard Agafay visit — this isn't a multi-day desert trek, and camps and activity providers (including us) have water, basic first aid, and support on hand. Pack light, pack practical, and save the rest of your suitcase space for souvenirs from the Marrakech souks.
